West Thornton Primary School

About Us

West Thornton Primary School is part of the Inspire Partnership Trust family of schools. The school comprises of two sites, one on Canterbury Road and other on Rosecourt Road, both in Croydon.  We serve a diverse community and have just under 1000 pupils on roll.

West Thornton Primary School is a vibrant learning community, where we offer children a fully rounded education, which includes an exciting creative curriculum and a highly inclusive, supportive environment.

We educate children from Reception to Year 6, on 2 sites, working closely with our partner schools in the Inspire Partnership as well as schools in our wider local community.

Partnership with parents and carers is at the centre of everything we do. Through regular newsletters, workshops, coffee mornings and celebration events, families and staff work hand in hand. Parents are learners too and our vision extends to providing a range of adult learning experiences that will transform and regenerate our community beyond recognition.  Together, everyone achieves more.

We look forward to working in partnership with you to ensure every pupil at the school achieves the best possible outcomes, enjoys their learning and aspires to be the best.

In October 2024, Ofsted judged the school as OUTSTANDING for Behaviour and Attitudes, Personal Development, Early Years Provision and Leadership and Management and GOOD for the Quality of Education.

In March 2025, the exceptional progress made by the school was recognised when we won the Education Business Awards 'Outstanding Progress' award.

The judges said: "In February 2020, West Thornton received an 'Inadequate' rating from Ofsted, leading to it merging with Inspire Partnership Academy Trust. By October 2024, the school's significant transformation saw it achieve 'Outstanding' ratings in Behaviour and Attitudes, Personal Development, Leadership and Management, and Early Years Provision, with a 'Good' rating for Quality of Education. Inspectors highlighted the school's ambitious curriculum, exceptional leadership, and the positive impact of the trust's support. This swift turnaround underscores the dedication of staff and leadership to fostering an environment where pupils thrive both academically and personally".

We are proud to announce that we have been recognised by the UK Government for the outstanding achievement of our disadvantaged pupils.

On Friday 23rd January, Headteachers Mrs Callaghan and Mrs Dennis received a letter from the Rt Hon Bridget Philipson, the Secretary of State for Education, for the outstanding achievements of our disadvantaged pupils at the end of the 2024/25 academic year.

The letter of congratulations confirms that our pupils' performance places our school among the very best schools in the country, and is one in which every child, regardless of their background, is given an excellent education.

The letter reads, "This success reflects the dedication of your staff and the hard work of your pupils. It shows what can be achieved when ambition and commitment come together...Your school's achievement demonstrates what is possible".

The success reflects our commitment to ensuring that no child is left behind.

Each pupil benefits from our commitment to quality first teaching, bespoke support for high needs pupils, nurturing pastoral care, alongside enriching extracurricular opportunities to ensure that all of our pupils enjoy primary school and leave us as confident learners.

"We are incredibly proud of this national recognition, which serves as a testament to the relentless hard work of our pupils and the unwavering dedication of our entire staff team. At our school, we believe that a child's background should never determine their future; this letter confirms that by combining high ambitions with a nurturing environment, we are truly breaking down barriers and ensuring every child has the opportunity to excel."
